"Zur Geschichte der Kostüme" by Louis Braun et al., Late 19th Century
Item Details
Author/Artist: Louis Braun, W. Diez, Ernst Fröhlich, J. Gehrts, C. Häberlin, M. Heil, Andr. Müller, F. Rothbarth, et al.
A notable late-19th-century compilation of historical dress, Zur Geschichte der Kostüme features 500 distinct costume designs across 125 plates, illustrating fashion from antiquity through the late 1800s. The illustrations are hand-colored wood engravings based on drawings by prominent German artists of the period, including Louis Braun and Wilhelm Diez.
Provenance: This copy features the personal bookplate of silent film icon Rudolph Valentino (1895–1926) affixed to the front pastedown. The bookplate, a lithograph depicting a medieval jousting knight, was designed by the legendary production designer William Cameron Menzies (1896–1957), known for his work on Gone with the Wind and The Thief of Bagdad. The specific imagery of the knight likely reflects Valentino’s own fencing interests and his screen persona.
